Rotary Literacy Program Benefits Local Elementary Libraries

Tyler County Booster

The Rotary Club ofWoodville has contributed a combined total of forty-six storybooks to the elementary school libraries in Colmesneil and Woodville. For the past two years, each guest speaker at the weekly Rotary meeting has been asked to sign a book to be donated to the library in his/ her honor. This literacy project was first introduced for 2007 - 2008 by President Lou Campbell, a Rotarian who resides in Colmesneil. Woodville resident Mark Tullia, who served as club president for 2008 - 2009, continued the program through his term of office. Literacy project chair Kaaren Sullivan chose the volumes based upon their visual appeal and enriching subject matter. The non-fiction selections range in subject matter from the history of the alphabet to oceanography to the tomb of King Tutankhamen. Many of the fiction selections have been awarded literary prizes and several are the works of such well known individuals as Katie Couric and retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. The Rotary club literacy program continues under the leadership of 2009 -2010 President Lyle Rainey and Jo Thomas, chair of the club’s service committee.
