Resolve to become a Village Volunteer in 2010

Tyler County Booster - January 2010

Now that it is 2010 aren’t we supposed to make resolutions for the new year? Items on the list might include
eat less, exercise more, call friends, visit relatives. How about adding to the list things like renewing your Tyler County Heritage Society membership or becoming a new member in the individual, family or business category? You could join one of the groups affiliated with the Village - Sons of Confederate Veterans, Order of the Confederate Rose, the Blacksmith group, Spinners and Weavers, Sassy Scrappers, or the railroad group. Each one of these groups would welcome you with open arms. You need only to call the Village at 283-2272 for their meeting times. There are also lots of other ways you can become involved at Heritage Village and you can decide how much time you want to devote. We need help with copying and mailing our monthly newsletters. We need help with odd maintenance jobs (there is an on-going list waiting for someone to work through it). We need help with Festival of the Arts, Dinner on the Grounds, Mexican Dinner, Toast to Texas, our Story-telling event, and Harvest Festival. We need demonstrators and docents and offer training for these positions. Do we ever do anything about the resolutions we do make? The above are resolutions we hope you do make for 2010 and keep! By now you get the idea that we want you and we need you to be active during this year in the workings of your Heritage Society. We need you to attend the activities during the year and bring your family and friends. We need you to eat at the Pickett House Restaurant and consider it for your next get-together. We need you to help publicize Heritage Village as you travel during the year. The next “big” opportunity you have to get involved with the Heritage Society is to attend the annual meeting on Monday, January 25, at the Pickett House Restaurant. If you would like to join us for dinner beginning promptly at 6:00 p.m. please call the Village at 283-2272 to make reservations. The cost is $12 per person. The business meeting will follow beginning at 7:00 p.m. You do not have to eat to participate in the meeting but, please, plan to arrive a little earlier than 7:00. Keep reading next week to learn about the guest speaker for the evening. You’ll want to hear him! A nominating committee will report on suggested new officers and members of the board of directors. Nominations will be accepted from the floor provided that the person nominated has been asked and consented to serve if elected. While you are at the meeting you will be given the opportunity to join the Heritage Society or renew your current membership. Dues are $20 for an individual, $30 for a family, and $60 for a small business. We need your membership because many grant applications want to know the number of members. They use that information to gauge the support of the local community. If you will be unable to attend the meeting, you may mail your dues to Tyler County Heritage Society, P.O. Box 888, Woodville, TX 75979 or bring them by the Gift Shop at Heritage Village any day from 9-5. From time to time this column tries to bring to your attention other activities/events taking place in the community that are worthy of your support. Coming up on January 11, at 7:00 p.m., the Texas A & M Singing Cadets will be presenting a concert at the Summit in Woodville. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. If you like good singing, this is the place for you to be on the evening of the 11th.
