Pirates Punch Their Ticket To Austin

Tyler County Booster

One year ago, the Spurger Pirates traveled to Huntsville and lost a heartbreaker in the regional quarterfinal round. That was then and this is now. Now the Spurger Pirates are one step closer to a state finals berth with a regional quarterfinal win against the Somerville Yeguas at the Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State University. The Pirates left no doubt as to who the victor would be when they took the 6-4 lead at 3:18 of the opening quarter. It was a lead they would never give up. George Whittaker paced the Pirates attack in the opening eight minutes as he outscored the Yeguas by himself dropping in 10 of the Pirates 14 first quarter points to only 8 points for Somerville. In the second quarter it would be Daniel Blankenship who took on the scoring load. Blankenship himself nearly outscored the Yeguas by himself in the second quarter as he added 9 points to the Pirates total while the Yeguas could only find the net for 11 points of their own. In addition to Blankenship, the Pirates also got baskets from Chase McGallion, Christian Norsworthy, and Jonathon Hutto. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded the Pirates were firmly in control 32-19. In the third quarter, Shain Rawls would get into the scoring column along with Blankenship, Whittaker and McGallion as Spurger extended its lead to 42-24. In the fourth, the Pirates continued to score and score often. This time Jarom Odom, Luke McLeod and Brett Russell joined the Pirate scoring parade. In addition to every Pirate having scored, all but one pulled down a rebound as well. Whittaker’s 19 points and 13 boards top all scorers. Blankenship had 12 points and 6 rebounds. McGallion added 11 points in the victory. The Pirates face Yorktown on Friday at 2PM.
