Tyler County Booster - November 2009

For the citizens of the two newest cities in Tyler County, this day has been a long time coming. With their Landowners Association dissolved, land owners at Ivanhoe had to find a way to fund the upkeep and improvements in that community. Landowners formed an Incorporation Committee and spent a lot of time looking at options for the community. Their hard worked paid off November 3 when the citizens voted to create two cities, Ivanhoe and Ivanhoe North. With all Provisional vote counted, in the City of Ivanhoe election, 222 votes were cast. There were 160 votes For Incorporation and 53 Against.

Bill Preston, who was running unopposed for Mayor, received 156 votes. Two Commissioners were elected. Cathy Bennett received 91 votes and Will Warren 65. Other candidates were Karen Sikor - 64 votes, Nancy Bodden - 39 votes, Carol Murrey - 6 votes, Dr. Jim Beattie - 19 votes, Byrdie Mosur - 36 votes, and James B. Vanek - 6 votes. In the City of Ivanhoe North election, 109 votes were cast, with 75 for Incorporation and 27 against. Joe McIntyre was elected Mayor with 74 votes to opponent Billy Jack Lewis’ 16. The two Commissioners elected were Mark Elliott with 53 votes and Dee Marie Baier with 38 votes. Two other candidates were in the running. Jimmy Gremillion, Jr. drew 33 votes and Laurie Siems 17. Creation of the two cities is the beginning of a process, with plans to ultimately merge the two cities into one, a move which will make the resulting city the second largest in Tyler County according to new city officials. Congratulations to your two newest Tyler County Cities.
