Speed limits to soon change

CORRIGAN -- The Texas Department of Transportation has recently announced that the speed limit on parts of Hwy 59 and Hwy 287 will be changed to 75 mph. The legislation also eliminated the 65 mph nighttime speed limit and all lower truck speed limits. In Texas, speed limits are set by the 85th percentile method, which represents the speed the majority of drivers will be traveling at or below. That's determined through speed checks conducted on average weekdays during off-peak hours and under favorable weather conditions and other variables including geographical conditions and crash history. "The studies have been completed and those roads deemed safe to increase the speed will undergo the changes," said Kathi White, TxDOT spokesperson. "However, installation of signage on two-lane roadways is delayed until a review of the pavement markings for Pass/ No Pass Zones has been completed." New 75 mph speed limit signs are already up in some other areas of the state. The speed limits will not be in effect until the signs are posted
