Two 18-wheelers collide near Piney Creek
CORRIGAN -- Two 18- wheelers collided on Thursday, August 15 shortly before 8 a.m. on Hwy 59 near Piney Creek. Leslie Charleston, 63, of Bloomington, was on US-59 South near Hickman Road and was driving an 18 wheeler loaded with pipe when he slammed into another 18-wheeler driven by Tommy Lovell, 71, of Huntington, who was hauling logs. According to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper David Hendry, Lovell attempted to crossover the south bound lanes of 59 from Hickman Road and failed to yield to Charleston. The collision sent both rigs into the center median and Lovell's rig came to rest in the median and other parts were scattered on the roadway. The Corrigan Volunteer Fire Department, Corrigan Police Department and troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the accident. Charleston sustained non life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital by Americare Ambulance. Lovell sustained serious injuries and was fl own by PHi Air Medical helicopter to Tyler East Texas Medical Center in critical condition. Traffi c on both sides of 59 was partially blocked during the investigation and cleanup. Citations are pending, Hendry said. Riley Wrecker Service, of Corrigan, removed the trucks.
