C-C FFA starts new shooting sports team
CORRIGAN -- Five members of the Corrigan-Camden FFA Shooting Sports team participated in the Brian Perry Memorial Sporting Clay Shoot at the River Ridge Ranch in Goodrich on Saturday, August 17. Members of the team are Kaitlyn Frank, Karissa Hubbard, Brittany Hudson, Logan Kosina and Byrd Purvis. Students competed as individuals in their own age group. To determine the winners, each individual had ten shots at the fl ying clay targets. After the students completed their individual shots, Matt Hughes, of Corrigan, led the group around the fi eld where they had opportunity to shoot different patterns of clay targets at ten stations with fi ve shots per station. After the winners of each age division were presented with a shotgun, other prizes were given to many of the other youth who competed in the shoot. Kaitlyn Frank was given a backpack; Karissa Hubbard was presented with two pockets knives; and Brittany Hudson received a Bone Collector Gun Case. Although no one on the team earned top prize, they all agreed it was a great day. Karissa said the event was much better than she thought it would be. Kaitlyn stated that it was a fun day and she is looking forward to the next competition. Brittany admitted that she has a bruise from the "kicking gun," but she feels like she learned a lot from the experience. Logan agreed that it was a fun day and was pretty cool. Byrd enjoyed being part of an event that supports the youth of Polk County by raising money to provide scholarships. The team members have been practicing one or two evenings each week to get ready for the opportunity to compete. Corrigan-Camden Ag teacher Dallas Willis, sponsor for the group, and her husband Brian Willis became members of the Pines Gun Club in Lufkin so the team would have a place to practice.
