CORRIGAN – Phil Bennett was a beloved teacher, coach, and friend to many at Corrigan-Camden High School. While head football coach at C-CHS, Coach Bennett made sure all students had a chance to have some fun on the field. And so, a field day for special needs students was started and included all sorts of activities such as short races, sack races, and other relay races. This annual event is held at the C-CISD Football Stadium in the spring. "This year will be the 37th Annual Phil Bennett Field Day. Coach Phil Bennett who was the head football coach in Corrigan at the time was the founder of field day. He believed that every child should have the opportunity to successfully participate in an athletic event. He passed away a few years after the first field day, but the event has been carried on in his memory every year since," stated Tracey Cobb, Director of Polk County Special Services Cooperative. "The member districts of Polk County Special Services Cooperative are the schools that participate in the event. This currently includes Big Sandy ISD, Corrigan-Camden ISD, Leggett ISD and Onalaska ISD." Student members of Corrigan-Camden High School's National Honor Society volunteer to assist student participants and help with the event. "They have volunteered at the field day for as long as I can remember (I was even a high school volunteer in the late 80's). Corrigan's student council began helping in recent years. A few years ago we asked the other participating districts if they would like to send their NHS and/or student council to volunteer as well. The feedback from all of the schools and parents of those that participate, as well as those that volunteer, is fabulous. I believe the volunteers get as much out of the experience as the participants do."The festivities get underway with a march of all participants around the track led by the C-CHS band. Then, the events begin. C-CHS students also join in on the fun attending and cheering on the students. Make plans to come out and support these boys and girls in a day of fun activities.
