Houston County citizens joined together on April 14-15 at the state capitol in Austin to participate in Legislative Day.
Many members of the community met on Tuesday, April 14 at an Austin restaurant for a dinner/mixer.
Houston County representatives enjoyed the company of State Representative, Chuck Hopson and his wife Billy .
“I am very excited about the group that went down.  We definitely made a presence that Houston County is here,” said Jeana Culp, Crockett Area Chamber of Commerce president.
On Wednesday, April 15, Houston County Legislative Day was kicked off with a buffet style breakfast hosted in the hotel.  Attendants enjoyed a delicious spread of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, muffins, and a combination of fruit.
Crockett Mayor Mask welcomed the speakers for the morning.
The first speaker of the morning was Representative Hopson, who spoke briefly about the importance of Houston County taking time out of their busy schedules to make their faces known in Austin.
He adamantly expressed how the presence of Houston County members will be significant when he is speaking for the county during Legislative meetings.
The group then heard strong powerful speeches from Senator Steve Ogden, Rick Rhodes, the assistant commissioner for Rural Economic Development, a TxDOT representative, Senator Armbrister from the Governor’s office, and Ray Glynn, deputy commissioner for School District Leadership and Educator Quality.
“Representative Hopson and Senator Ogden were fabulous as well as all of the other speakers.  We were fortunate to obtain the heavy hitters instead of the low men on the totem pole which showed the importance of Houston County.”  Mrs. Culp said.
Immediately following the breakfast the Houston County group made their way to the state capitol building where a picture was taken with Representative Hopson on the south steps of the capitol.
Residents present for Houston County were then introduced by Representative Hopson in the House Gallery and introduced in the Senate Gallery by Senator Steve Ogden as well.
Houston County Legislative Day was deemed a huge success and a great opportunity for those attending.
“Legislative Days are a unique opportunity for the citizens of our ccunty to have one on one time with our state officials and representatives from other agencies as well.  I recommend anyone to attend Legislative Days in the future.  It is a great experience to see what our officials are doing for us in Austin,” said Tim Culp, director of Crockett Economic and Development Corporation.
