Local Cub Scout Pack races Pinewood Derby cars
Houston County Courier

CROCKETT - The Cub Scouts of local Pack 422 met recently to race their home-made miniature Pinewood Derby cars. Medals were given for first, second, and third place for each den. Certificates were also awarded for most creative car and most unique. The boys, with help from their parents, constructed their cars from official BSA Pine-wood Derby kits containing a seven-inch block of wood, four wheels, and four axle nails. The scouts were allowed to paint, decorate and add weights to their vehicles, but the cars could not weigh over five ounces. The cars are gravity powered. The boys raced their Pine-wood Derby cars on a three-lane 30-foot sloping wooden track. After several heats to determine the fastest cars, winners were declared. The winners for the Tiger den, first grade were: Jack Crow 1st, Tommy Bertram 2nd and Jack Easley 3rd. The champions for the Wolves, second grade were: Tyler Davis 1st, Justin Vondra 2nd and Eric Cutshaw 3rd. The Bear winners, third grade were Riley Catoe 1st and Carter Catoe 2nd. For the Webelos, fourth grade, the victors were: Lane Braun 1st, J.R. Cousins 2nd and Clay Cyr 3rd. Scrubs,” or siblings, of the scouts were also allowed to build a car and race. The win-ners of the Scrub division were: Cody Braun 1st, Carter Crow 2nd), and Lauren Cyr 3rd. The first Pinewood Derby was held in 1953 by a cubmaster in California who came up with the idea to race miniature wood cars for those scouts who were too young to participate in the Soap Box derby races. The cars had the same gravity-powered concept as the full-size Soap Box Derby cars, but were much smaller and easier to build. Crockett Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are chartered through Crockett First Me-thodist Church. Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped young-er boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family pro-gram designed for boys who are in the first through fifth grades.
