Wildfire planning meeting held
Houston County Courier - August 2008
By Daphne Hereford
Emergency personnel, emergency management officials and representatives from the various fire departments within the county assembled on Thursday, Aug. 7 to discuss a Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
A presentation by Texas Forest Service Urban Wildland Interface Coordinator Jeffrey Lester reviewed ways to combat wildfires before they happen and reduce the risk county residents face from wildfire.
Lester said, "Living in a home nestled in the woods or near the edge of a subdivision is a dream come true for many in Houston County, but in the event of a wildfire that dream could quickly end."
Lester said that forestland dominates much of the county’s landscape and each year more and more people are moving to the Urban Wildland Interface (UWI), an area with great potential for the loss of homes due to wildfire.
Houston County Community Wildfire Protection Plan will help landowners initiate preventative measures before a wildfire strikes in their area.
Fire departments attending the meeting included Crockett, Austonio, Belott, Kennard/Ratcliff, Latexo, Lovelady, Pennington Porter Springs and Weldon.
Houston County Emergency Management Coordinator David Lamb said that Houston County is the second in the state to initiate such a plan.
