Fall Courses Offered at Library
Houston County Courier - August 2008

Three adult courses will be taught at the John H. Wootters Crockett Public Library this fall.

PreGED, English as a Second Language (ESL), and a computer class will begin the Tuesday after Labor Day.

These courses are offered free to those with a library card, which is also free.

The PreGED course is being offered for the fifth year.  This year it will begin Tuesday, Sept. 2, and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-5:30 p.m.

Anyone who is interested in receiving some basic instruction before taking the GED test can sign up for this class.

Materials start at a comfortable reading level and assess the strengths and weaknesses of each student.

Enrollment is limited to eight adults so each student can receive personal attention.

The fall session lasts 11 weeks and includes language arts writing, language arts reading, and critical thinking skills.  Mathematics is taught in the spring.

In addition to the PreGED course offered each fall and spring, a computer program is available for use in the library all year for individuals who are interested in preparing independently for the GED test.

The library also has available several GED checkout books containing subject preparation and practice tests.

The second type of class to begin this fall is ESL.  That group will meet on Mondays 4:30-5:30 p.m.

The first class day this fall is Monday, Sept. 8.  Class size is limited to eight students.  Each student will need to purchase a student book and a workbook that will be available on the first day of class.

Total cost of both books is $16.  Any person or business who would like to provide a book scholarship for a student is encouraged to do so at the library.

Beverly Mize, a certified teacher, will teach the classes.

Anyone interested in either course is urged to call 544-3089 or go by the library at 709 E. Houston.

Pre-registration is required, therefore anyone interested needs to enroll at the library by the end of August.

James Sutton will teach a computer class four Tuesdays in September from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Each session has a different focus: Sept. 9 introduction, Sept. 16 email, Sept. 23 browsing, and Sept. 26 eBay.

Anyone interested in these classes can register at the circulation desk in the library during the month of August.

Library hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The library will be closed Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day.
