As Governor Rick Perry prepares for his Aug. 6 National Day of Prayer and Fasting event at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Houston County Judge Lonnie Hunt followed the governor’s lead this week, signing a proclamation declaring Saturday, Aug. 6 as a day of prayer in Houston County. In his proclamation, Hunt states, Whereas, in 1775, the Continental Congress asked the colonies to join in prayer, seeking wisdom as they faced the responsibility and opportunity of building a new nation; and “Whereas, throughout history, in times of crisis, leaders of our national, state and local governments have called on citizens to join together in prayer for our nation and its people; and “Whereas, the United States and other countries of the world are currently beset by a number of trials, including economic recession, natural disasters, the lingering danger of terrorism and wars, and the decline of our culture in the context of the demise of families; and “Whereas, Houston County is currently suffering from an ongoing drought, high unemployment and various other economic and cultural issues which affect the lives of every citizen; and “Whereas Governor Rick Perry has issued a call for citizens to once again join together for a solemn day of prayer for our nation; and “Whereas the members of the Major Jarrell Beasley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are urging the citizens of Houston County to join with our fellow Texans and Americans in praying for our county, our state and our nation; . . . .” The county judge, in declaring Aug. 6 as a day of prayer, proclaimed, “I urge people of faith to pray on that day for the healing of our country, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of enduring values as our guiding force.”
