Citizens warned about check scam

Local officials are warning citizens about a check-cashing scam that has recently resurfaced in the area.
According to law enforcement officials, a Crockett resident received a check in the amount of $995.59 reportedly from Kayo International Center in West Linn, Ore.
The Bowie Avenue resident who received the bogus check took it to the Crockett Police Department on Wednesday, Dec. 10 and filed a report.
Along with the check, the resident received a letter advising her to call a named individual at a designated phone number and after providing additional information she would then receive an additional $3,871.18.
The resident said the phone numbers listed on the letter have no association with the actual company as named on the letter.
"The complainant recognized the letter and check as a scam and wanted to report it to Crockett Police Department in case others received a similar letter," authorities said in their report.
A scam similar to the one described by the resident surfaced about a year ago and in some cases residents were cheated out of money.
Authorities urged anyone with information regarding bogus checks and scams of the nature described to contact law enforcement immediately.
