The John H. Wooters Crockett Library held a Christmas Open House from 3-5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10. Mayor Wayne Mask proclaimed the day as Emma Catherine Walter's Day.
Relatives of Ms. Walters attending the event included the Darsey family of Grapeland, Charley, Tonya, Brooke, and Haley and Pam Hill Kuehne of Dallas.
According to Librarian Sharlene Huffmaster, Ms. Walter's recent endowment makes it possible for the library to expand and enhance its services to the community.
The library staff was introduced: by Ms. Huffmaster: James Sutton, technology and circulation; Beverly Mize, reference and GED instructor, and Gloria Wooten, children's librarian and Homestead 4-H Club was acknowledged for contributing the homemade cookies.
Smitty Dean, president of the library board of directors was present, as were members of the endowment fund: Mrs. Darsey, secretary, Ms. Kuehne, member, and Treasurer Rae Pat Dean.
A special section has been made in honor of Ms. Walters, which includes her portrait, a framed 19th century insurance policy and the proclamation, which was first presented in August 2008 when the endowment was announced.
Darsey's Furniture donated a couch and love seat for this special area in honor of Ms. Walters.
