Houston County Courier - February 2009
By Cyndy Keys
President of Newcomers
Newcomers held a delicious Mexican style dinner, catered by Amber Hyatt, on Monday, Feb. 9 in the First Community Bank Community Room on the square.
Sheriff Darrel Bobbitt was the guest speaker at the dinner and meeting and spoke on several points of interest concerning his office and the community.
He said that everyone should be on the alert for scams, which are hitting our area hard in these struggling, economic times. He suggested that everyone be aware of what is happening around us.
He said that we should become familiar with the officers that patrol our individual neighborhoods and areas. We could help assist these officers by being aware of what is going on in our particular areas and help to recognize the things that just don't seem right.
Sheriff Bobbitt encouraged the group to talk to our senators and legislators and let them know of the needs of the community. He said they do listen even if some individuals may not think so.
Sheriff Bobbitt encouraged the group to utilize their rights as citizens and show support for the officers that serve us.
He said that computer crimes are on the rise nationwide and Houston County is no exception. "Be alert and do not release personal information to anyone; it is not safe," he added.
He said, "If something sounds too good to be true, most likely it isn't, so be cautious." He encouraged the crowd to watch out for those who are most vulnerable such as children and elderly.
The sheriff followed his speech by answering a variety of questions from the floor. The group present appreciated the opportunity to hear from our county sheriff.
