According to figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Feb. 17, Houston County has 547 more residents than it did 10 years ago. The 2010 census data indicates 23, 732 people now live in Houston County. In 2000, there were 23,185 people counted in the census. The cities of Kennard, Latexo and Lovelady also showed growth. The initial data released to the State of Texas last week will be used for political redistricting purposes. While the county showed growth, figures indicate a loss of 191 residents in Crockett. In 2000, Crockett’s total population was 7,141. In 2010, the total population was 6,950. A review of previous censurecords indicates the most significant drop in population for Crockett was shown in the 1920 census. Those records showed a population decrease of 876. The city turned around with an incease of 1,380 in 1930. The City of Grapeland also lost a few residents since 2000. The 2010 census report states 1,489 now live in Grapeland. There were 1,451 residents counted in the 2000 census. Like the county, the City of Lovelady gained in population. The 2010 census indicates there are now 649 residents living in Lovelady, 41 more than the 608 reported there in 2000. The City of Latexo also has grown. In 2000, Latexo had 272 residents, compared to 322 in 2010. This reflects a 50-person increase. In Kennard, there were 317 residents in 2000, 20 less than the 337 reported in 2010.
