County mourns passing of Latexo’s first mayor

LATEXO – County residents are mourning the loss of Irene Welch who passed away on Saturday, Jan. 9 at the age of 82.
Mrs. Welch served as Latexo’s first mayor and was the third woman public school superintendent in the state of Texas.
She worked as an elementary, junior high and high school teacher and served as superintendent of Latexo Independent School District 1949-1974.
She retired in 1988 after serving with the Houston-Trinity county Special Education Coop for 14 years.
She also served 17 years on the board of directors of the john H. Wootters Crockett Public Library.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 13 at the First United Methodist Church in Crockett.
