Storm causes power outage
Houston County Courier - June 2008
A severe thunderstorm that ripped through the Latexo on Sunday, June 29 caused at least two power outages along Hwy. 19.
At about 4 p.m. high winds, driving rain and nearby lightning strikes about 2.25 miles north of Loop 304 caused a large power cable to break, burn and fall to the ground.
According to witnesses, there was what appeared to be explosion associated with the incident and at one point a utility pole was surrounded by fire.
A nearby resident said they first heard the lightning strike that was immediately followed by the sound of an explosion then an orange glow surrounded the area.
The resident called authorities and Houston County Sheriff's Office immediately dispatched emergency personnel who arrived within minutes.
When the burning cable landed on a concrete driveway several holes measuring about one-inch in diameter and two inches deep resulted.
Power was temporarily restored about 6 p.m. and an Oncor crew returned about 8 p.m. and finished replacing the cable about 9:30 p.m.
Latexo Volunteer Fire Department and Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Brent Taylor also responded to the scene.
