Caddo Mounds State Historic Site announces Atlatl program

ALTO - Caddo Mounds State Historic Site invites the public to participate in a day program learning about the ancient hunting and throwing device known as the Atlatl. The program will be offered twice during the day, Saturday, July 21, at 10 a.m.. and at 2 p.m. Activities will include instruction on its history, different atlatl styles and throwing techniques. There also will be an outside segment where the participants can practice throwing darts at a target using the Atlatl. This program is the first in a primitive technologies series to be offered at the site. Neal Stilley, archeological steward for the Texas Historical Commission, and Anthony Souther, site manager, will host the program for adults and youth seven years and older. Regular admission fees to the site apply: adults, $4 and youth 6-18, $3. There is no additional charge for the program, but donations are welcome to defray the program cost. Caddo Mounds SHS is located at 1649 SH 21 West in Alto, approximately 30 minutes from Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Jacksonville and Crockett. Ample parking is provided.
