Neches River claims life of Athens man
Houston County Courier - June 2008

Following a call from authorities in Cherokee County on Saturday, June 14, Houston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a location on the Neches River near Hwy. 21 east at approximately 7:42 p.m. to investigate a possible drowning

The information HCSO received indicated a 9-year-old boy was having trouble getting out of the river as he was swimming and his stepfather, Richard Glen Wilcox, 53, of Athens, went in to help him.

The son was reportedly able to return to the bank on his own but Wilcox started having trouble and sent his son for help.

Before help arrived, Wilcox authorities said went under the water and never resurfaced.
Texas Parks and Wildlife, HCSO, National Forest Service, Houston County Search and Rescue as well as numerous family members, friends and concerned citizens initiated a recovery effort.

Family members located Wilcox and authorities recovered his body at approximately 9:15 p.m., on Sunday, June 15, in the area where he was last seen.

Justice of the Peace Clyde Black arrived on scene, conducted an inquest and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
