Third Annual Watermelon Festival Scheduled

CROCKETT - The 3rd Annual Watermelon will kick off on Saturday, June 27 in the Grapeland City Park from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Wade Pennington and sons will hand out free slices of ice cold watermelon throughout the day.
Texas Watermelon Queen Mollie Bennett will be there signing autographs and taking pictures.
There will be a seed spitting contest at 1 p.m. with registration at 12:30 p.m., a washer pitching begin at 10 a.m. Must register between 9 – 9:30 a.m. contest and the Grapeland Volunteer Fire Department will be there to compete in the area fireman games.
There will be a moonwalk, face painting and a train ride for the youngsters to enjoy. Also there will be craft booths and food booths available as well.
“The Dixie Darlings: Elvis Tribute and Legends Show” and The Rick Year Band will be the entertainment for the event.
Barbecue contest rules are as follows: Entries must be received by Monday, June 22 Please mail entries to: Watermelon Festival – BBQ Cook off Attn: Rhonda Shaw 1867 FM 2423 Grapeland, TX 75844.
Check in and set up will begin on Friday, June 26. All contest meats for each team, are to be inspected by the Committee prior to cooking. Non-Inspected meats will not be accepted. No pre-seasoned or pre-cooked meat will be allowed.
Marinating allowed only after inspection. No sauce or garnish may be added to entries at judging time. Sauce may be used as a “sop” during cooking, but not poured on for presentation. Aluminum foil may be used for cooking purposes, but is not allowed on entry tray.
The Chief Cook will be responsible for the conduct of his team and visitors. Amplification equipment should be used in moderation. All such equipment must be turned off by midnight.
Entrée containers will be distributed at time of check-in. NOTE- only containers distributed are accepted at the judging station.
There will be a 2-part ticket on each container. Only the un-taped ticket is to be removed when you turn in your container.
Keep this portion of this ticket for the awards announcements.
Each team will be responsible for having their contest meat at the judging station at the designated time.
Contest meat entries received after the designated time will not be accepted for judging. Beans 11 a.m. Chicken: 12 p.m. Ribs 1p.m. Brisket: 2p.m.
The winning teams will be announced and awards will be given for first through third place in each category beginning at 3p.m. from the bandstand in the park.
Judging Criteria for each entry will be appearance (smoke ring), aroma, taste, tenderness and cut.
Fires must be wood or wood substance. No electric or gas fired pits will be allowed for contest entry meats. Fires may be in suitable containers, but at no time be allowed directly on the ground. Each team must bring a fire extinguisher.
The Grapeland Chamber of Commerce has the right to modify or expand these rules and regulations. Decisions of the Chamber and Judges are final.
The Grapeland Chamber of Commerce is not responsible for theft or damage to equipment or property of contestants while participating in this event.
All cook sites must be cleaned before moving out. Absolutely no ashes, beans or trash left on cook sites.
Alcohol may be used in recipes, but excessive use of alcoholic beverages or possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages in violation of Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code or by the laws of the City of Grapeland and or Houston county by a member of a team or person in the contestant’s space could be grounds for disqualification and eviction from the Contest.
Each contestant must comply with all pertinent laws and ordinances, including without limitation, City of Grapeland and Houston County and the provisions of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code.
