CROCKETT - Houston County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Samuel Lee Cupa of Grapeland on Thursday, June 18 after Anderson County authorities issued a warrant charging him with indecency with a child.
Reports indicate the 59-year-old Cupa was arrested about 7:30 p.m. at his home in Grapeland.
He was transported to Anderson County Jail on Friday, June 19, where as of press time on Friday, June 26 he remained.
According to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor, Cupa was charged in connection with an allegation that he fondled a minor on Wednesday, June 17 in Anderson County and the child’s parent reportedly contacted authorities.
Anderson County authorities said Houston County is also investigating the possibility of a similar offense involving Cupa.
Cupa had been employed as the chaplain at the Crockett State School since January 2008.
Texas Youth Commission spokesman Jim Hurley said Cupa was immediately suspended and termination proceedings were initiated when they learned of the charges.
“We have made arrangements to ensure that the duties the chaplain performs at the Crockett State School will continue without interruption,” Hurley said.
In a telephone interview on Friday, June 26, authorities with Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said Cupa's felony warrant had a pre-set bond of $100,000 set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Westley.
