Boys & Girls Club Day Celebrated
Houston County Courier - March 2009
Boys & Girls Club Day was celebrated Monday, March 2 by the local boys and girls at the clubhouse on 1115 Brazos Street adjacent to Davy Crockett Memorial Park in Crockett.
First proclaimed on Feb. 17, 2000, Boys & Girls Club Day has been celebrated on March 2 ever since.
On Monday, under the direction of Club Director Xavier Wooten and a dedicated staff, attending youth wore club T-shirts, played fun games, and were treated to pizza to commemorate the day which was the culmination of a dream-come-true when the Boys & Girls Club of Crockett opened its doors to the youth of the community.
Board president of the B&GC, Don Gordon, joined director, club members, and community guests for the occasion.
Crockett Mayor Wayne Mask was unable to attend because of scheduling conflicts, but according to Wooten, the mayor will have another opportunity to declare a proclamation for the week of March 22-28, which will be known as Boys & Girls Club Week.
"The National Boys & Girls Club Week will showcase how vital our community based organization is actively growing and dramatically improving the lives of the entire community," said Xavier Wooten.
He added, "This is a time in our nation's history where people need help; not just financially, but all around help. The Boys & Girls Club of Crockett is not just here for children, but for the whole family."
Contact Wooten at 544-2582, or visit the Web site at www.bgca.org for more information about membership, employment opportunities, or volunteering.
