County Issues Burn Ban
Houston County Courier - March 2009
Houston County is back under a burn ban as of 10 a.m., Monday, March 2. This is a 7-day burn ban issued by Houston County Judge Lonnie Hunt which runs until 10 a.m. Monday, March 9, unless extended by the commissioners court.
Houston County Commissioners Court will meet Monday, March 9, 9 a.m., to make that determination and to meet at its rescheduled time from Tuesday, March 10, 10 a.m.
The Declaration of Disaster and Order Prohibiting Outdoor Burning states "the county is under imminent threat of severe damage, injury of loss of life or property resulting from the threat of wildfires due to extremely dry grassland fuel, drought and other weather related conditions."
All outdoor burning is prohibited in the unincorporated areas of Houston County; however, the order does not prohibit outdoor burning activities carried out by Federal Certified Agencies.
The state currently has 80 percent of counties under a burn ban.
