Arthur Hammons, 58, of Latexo was arrested by the Houston County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, March 27 after an investi¬gation of sexual abuse of a teenage girl. Hammons was a custo¬dian at Latexo Elementa¬ry School and a substitute LISD bus driver. LISD Superintendent Don Elsom reported Hammons’ employment was terminated as soon as the district was notified of the charges. The Latexo ISD staff has been notified Hammons is not allowed on the school campuses, Elsom further stated. “There is no indication anything happened at the school district,” Elsom said. “We are doing everything possible to keep our chil¬dren safe,” Elsom said. All school employees are fingerprinted and a back¬ground check is conducted before they are hired. If something happens after the district hires someone, the district is notified, Elsom explained. He also stated that, in the interest of protecting chil¬dren, suspicion of wrongdo¬ing is grounds for dismiss¬al. According to the arrest (probable cause) affidavit, the victim alleged Hammons had molested her on several occasions in 2008 when she was approximately 13-14 years old. Also according to the ar¬rest affidavit, Hammons stated he was not going to put the victim through a trial and he gave a written state¬ment in which he confessed to the allegations. “He (Hammons) stated that he came to his senses an prayed about it and begged her (the victim) forgive¬ness,” the arrest affidavit states. Hammons is charged with sexual assault and indecen¬cy with a child/sexual con¬tact. Both of these charges are second degree felonies. As of press time, Ham¬mons is in the Houston County Jail. Bond was set at $30,000 for each charge.
