Crockett Independent School District Attorney Wayne Haglund will conduct the search for their new superintendent.
In a special meeting held on Wednesday, April 29, CISD trustees voted unanimously to have Haglund receive the applications, conduct the screening and present candidates for the position to trustees for their consideration.
TASB Executive Search conducted the district’s last two searches for a superintendent.
In a telephone interview on Friday morning, May 1 when asked why trustees voted to have Haglund conduct the superintendent search, CISD Board President Claude Watson said, “I don’t have an answer for you. The board voted to employ him to do the search.”
Based on enrollment, CISD’s legal bills are among the highest in the county.
According to records received as a result of public information requests, in the six months of the current school year CISD has spent $95,364 compared to Kennard’s          $18,946 and Grapeland’s $2,614.
The districts spending the least amount for the 2008-2009 year were Lovelady at $1,117 and Latexo with the lowest number at $500.
CISD does differ from other districts in the since they are designated as a small 3A school while Kennard, Grapeland, Lovelady and Latexo are 1A schools.
The parameters for the most recent school classifications for 2008-2010 are 1A schools have an enrollment of 199 or fewer high school students and 3A numbers are 430-979 high school students.
Based on the highest numbers provided in the parameters, CISD spent $97.41 per student on legal fees while Latexo spent $2.51 per student in the first six months of the 2008-2009 year.
When asked why their per capita legal fees were the lowest in the county, Latexo Superintendent Dr. Roy Tucker said, “I do my research and consult all my free resources and that usually gives me enough information to make an informed decision.” Dr. Tucker said Latexo ISD retains Powell and Leon of Austin for the their legal matters.
Differences in the amounts spent by each of the districts for previous years were not quite so dramatic as for the first six months of the current year.
For example in the 2005-2006 year CISD spent $73,425, Kenanrd $44,782, Grapeland $12,434, Lovelady $1,890 and Latexo $110.
The 2006-2007 year brought forth totals of CISD $81,298, Kennard $21,445, Grapeland $3,948, Lovelady $1,329 and Latexo $500.
The 2007-2008 year amounts equaled CISD $73,787, Kennard $7,797. Grapeland $4,246, Lovelady $1,720 and Latexo $500.
