One of the two people airlifted to ETMC Tyler after a head-on crash Saturday, April 25 on CR 2300 about 1.6 miles north of Grapeland died on Monday, April 27.
According to authorities, 61-year-old Karen Bridges underwent surgery Sunday for injuries she sustained in the crash but passed away on Monday evening.
Reports indicate a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Dicky Lynn Bridges, 64, of Grapeland was southbound on CR 2300 when it collided head-on with a 1998 Chevrolet pickup driven by John Michael Obannon, 36, of Latexo.
The pickup driven by Obannon was reportedly northbound on CR 2300 at a high rate of speed when he lost control as he attempted to negotiate a curve.
Authorities said Bridges steered left to avoid a crash but the vehicles collided head-on.
Obannon was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the pickup. He was airlifted to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Mrs. Bridges was a passenger in the Suburban and was airlifted to the hospital for treatment of the injuries she sustained in the crash. Mrs. Bridges and her husband were both wearing their seat belts.
Authorities said the crash remained under investigation.
Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Bobby Bowlin and Trooper Kevin January, Houston County Sheriff’s Office, ETMC EMS, Grapeland Police Department, Grapeland EMS and Grapeland Volunteer Fire Department, ETMC Air One Athens and PHI Air Med 11 responded to the call.
