About thirty young men at the Crockett State School perched themselves on the roof of the gymnasium Sunday night, April 26 and remained there for several hours.
According to television news reports the incident came to a halt about 9:30 p.m. after the inmates exited the rooftop and ran into the dormitory.
Texas Youth Commission spokesman Jim Hurley said it took two-three hours to get the youth contained and back into their rooms.
He said they notified the police but did not need assistance with the incident.
Hurley said one boy was injured but he was treated and sent back to his room.
News reports said the event was a demonstration but Hurley said, “They weren’t demonstrating anything.” The television news report, that included video, indicated while on the roof the youth were yelling obscenities and making threatening gestures toward CSS staff members.
He added that the event was an exception but things of that nature did happen from time-to-time that it was not normal but not unheard of .
