Senior of the year named

Following a countywide nomination process, Eddie Atkinson, of Crockett, has been named Senior Citizen of Houston County for 2009.
Nominations from throughout the area were submitted to Crown Health Services and the winner was selected through an intricate process of judging performed by a panel of community professionals.
Those nominating the 82-year-old Atkinson said, “He is the youngest octogenarian I know. He is an amazing artist, Just last week he spent about four hours at Latexo Elementary School discussing art and history with the students as he displayed the miniature Noah’s Ark that he constructed.”
Friends say that Atkinson also teaches children Spanish on Wednesday nights before church and leads preaching and singing at the senior citizens center and nursing homes on a weekly basis.
As part of the honor of being named the year’s top senior, Atkinson received a $400 gift certificate for eye care and dinner for two at a local upscale restaurant.
