Augusta Cemetery Association to honor veterans

The Augusta Cemetery Association will hold a special tribute honoring its veterans during the 62nd annual homecoming services from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, June 3. During the special ceremony, a veterans memorial will be unveiled which honors all Augusta Cemetery Association veterans who have been buried in the cemetery and also those who have purchased plots or reserved spaces. More than 113 soldiers will be honored during the services. The veterans memorial features a large center monument that includes the insignia of all the military branches will be placed between the flag poles. The center monument will be flanked by four tablet stones with the names of the veterans who served in the following wars: the Republic of Texas, the U.S.-Mexican War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, the War on Terrorism and those who served during peace time. Stars will be placed by the names of soldiers killed in service. A memorial bench will be placed among the monuments. The association would like to thank those who have donated to this special tribute. Donations for the memorial still are accepted. The service will be held at the Augusta Cemetery on Houston County Road 1680 in Augusta. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, umbrella or canopy and drinks. Lunch will take place under the large trees in the new section after the annual business meeting.
