Governor attends dedication

CROCKETT - Texas Governor Rick Perry was a featured speaker for the dedication of the Rural Physician's Education Center held on Monday afternoon, Nov. 23.
"This is a big deal and a positive step in the ongoing efforts to assist people who live in smaller towns," Governor Perry said in his opening remarks.
The governor recounted his experiences growing up in a small town and the importance of health care in rural areas.
During his speech the governor praised State Representative Chuck Hopson for his efforts to help rural areas and recognized ETMC Senior Vice President Jerry Massey, who was in the audience, for the positive impact the hospital has made.
"This program run by Dr. Ray Morrison is a win-win situation," Governor Perry said. "It's going to make a real difference," he added.
The governor concluded his comments by saying, "A significant number of the doctors to be who stay here will make the decision to stay in small towns and that will make a big impact on healthcare."
Regarding the opening of the education center, Representative Hopson said, "I think this will be a blueprint for Texas. I think you are seeing the future."
Dr. John Bowling, professor department of family medicine, UNTHSCFW-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine commended the facility as a model for other communities to follow. He said, “At the site training has shown to be most cost effective." He concluded his comments by thanking the community for their commitment to the project.
Dr. David McClellan, program director, Texas A&M Family Practice Residency congratulated the community and physicians for having the foresight and vision for the project.
Other dignitaries and elected officials participating in the ceremonies included Houston County Judge Lonnie Hunt, Crockett Mayor Wayne Mask, Boy Scout Troop #419.
Members of the Houston County Hospital Board include Dr. John Stovall, Dr. Morrison, Dr. Patrick Walker, Dr. George Beeler, Dr. Richard Kelly, Virginia Lewis, Deborah Blackwell, Carol Dawson and Barbara Crowson.
