Sunset Christian Church Celebrates Founders' Day

Sunset Christian Church of Grapeland, established in 1903, celebrates Founder's Day on Sunday, Oct. 12, 10:30 a.m. A special program is planned with Pastor Dr. Vance Drum delivering the message, "Founder's Day: Looking Back--Celebrating 105 Years at Sunset."
The program will honor all deceased members with a special reading of names, "Remembering Our Sunset Founders and Deceased Members," beginning with the original pastor, B. F. Brill (1903-1907).
Spanning over a century, new generations of family members will recognize their ancestors as deceased members' names are read.
1903-1911: Brimberry, Davis, Edge, Green, James, Kyle, Oliver, Shaver, Skidmore, Tiller, and Yates;
1912-1919: Brimberry, Colkin, Oliver, Skidmore, Smith, Story, Walton, and ministers Rev. W. N. Werlick (1907-1912), Thomas Edward Hague (1912), and Rev. Ed Leediker (1912-1918);
1920s-1930s: Brimberry, Childs, Clark, Colkin, Dailey, Edge, Green, James, Johnson, Langham, Leamonss, Lively, Mason, Mills, Oliver, Owens, Richards, Shaver, Skidmore, Smith, Spruill, Streetman, Story, Thetford, and Yates and minister Rev. M.L. Dickey (1929-1946);
1940s-1960s: Allen, Barnes, Brimberry, Brown, Colkin, Green, Hagan, Harmon, James, Johnson, Jones, Manning, Martin, Nourse, Owens, Skidmore, Withrow and minister Ed Seal (1965-1968);
1970s-1990: Allen, Barton, Brimberry, Clark, Dorn, Herod, James, Mason, Minter, Moore, Pelham, Rothwell, Shaver, Story, Turner, Weisinger and ministers Floyd Garver (1982-1985), Rev. Jesse Pugh (1979 and 1985-1987), Rev. Lawrence Reece (1988-1999);
1991-2008: Brimberry, Christ, Edge, Garrison, Hinson, King, Leaves, Newman, Pugh, Shelton, Shaver, Underwood, Wright.
Sunset Christian Church, located two and one-half miles east of Grapeland on FM 227, Augusta Road, is presently occupying its fourth building since the first church, or brush arbor, was built in 1903. 
Besides congregational singing, the New Rendition, consisting of Rhonda Price, Stephen Bobbitt, Brent and Emily Price and Katie Driskell will perform, Nicole Bonvillian will sing "The Lord's Prayer," and Jerry Hinson will recite a poetic reflection, "Beyond the Sunset,"
For those in attendance with small children, a nursery is provided.  Refreshments will follow the Founder's Day program.
