Deputy enters guilty plea
Houston County Courier - October 2009
Houston County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Henry Doyce Gresham. Jr., 51, of Crockett, pleaded guilty on Monday, Oct. 5 to Class B misdemeanor simple assault charges in federal court in Lufkin.
In a similar move, Houston County Bailiff Charles James Clark, 63, of Crockett reportedly also pleaded guilty to the same misdemeanor charges in a federal court in Beaumont on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
According to information received from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas, Gresham admitted that on July 11, 2008, he verbally and physically confronted an individual at Gresham's residence, and then transported him in a county vehicle into the Davy Crockett National Forest, where he was assaulted and abandoned.
Gresham pleaded guilty before United States Magistrate Keith Giblin.
A sentencing date was not set for Gresham and as of press time no information was available regarding Clark’s sentencing.
Gresham faces up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Jim Middleton and Frank Coan prosecuted the case.
At the time of their plea both men were on administrative leave from their positions at the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.
In a telephone interview on Wednesday morning, Oct. 14, Houston County Sheriff Darrel Bobbitt said the men have been relieved from their duties in his office.
