The Houston County Commissioners Court voted during a special session on Monday, Oct. 18, to approve $550 in expenses for a luncheon and a tour of at least one historic home for a group of travel professionals. This is the first activity the county has sponsored with its new Hotel Occupancy Tax which is earmarked for the promotion of tourism and visitors. Houston County hosted the group of travel professionals on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The group of approximately 25 people included writers and a photographer for Texas Highways Magazine, travel counselors from AAA, staff members from the TXDOT travel department headquartered in Austin and a travel counselor from each of 14 Texas Travel Information Centers. While in Houston County, the group visited Salmon Lake Park, Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area and several sites in downtown Crockett. A catered lunch was served to the group at the historic 1854 Monroe Crook House, located at 707 East Houston Ave. After their lunch, they had time to visit the Downes- Aldrich House and to stroll down to the Square before departing for Huntsville.
