A 12-year-old Eustace child died Sunday, Sept. 25 from injuries sustained in an ATV accident. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched at about 2:04 p.m. Sunday to an all-terrain vehicle accident off CR 1195 in the Weches area, on property known as the Glade Branch Hunting Club. When deputies from HCSO, along with ETMC EMS and Weches VFD arrived at the scene, a Polaris Ranger ATV was found turned upside down from a roll-over, according to a HCSO press release. HCSO reported the driver of the ATV was a young male, and that he was found to be deceased due to trauma from the accident. Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, Judge Clyde Black, was then called to the scene. The child was at the hunting club with his grandfather, getting ready for deer season. “It is believed that unsafe speed and an unfastened seat belt were factors in this accident.” HCSO officials stated. Black briefly addressed the Crockett Lions Club Tuesday, expressing concern about the safety of people who will be using ATVs more as deer season approaches. Black urges Houston Countians to have fun, but be very cautious with ATVs. This was the second ATV-involved accident in Houston County in little more than a week. On Monday, Sept. 26, very early in the morning, a Grapeland youth was seriously injured while driving an ATV. That young man is at home recovering from multiple injuries.
