Fire at Zilkha Biomass produces smoke, odor

A fire was reported at the Zilkha Biomass Plant on West Loop 304 in Crockett at about 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. When the Crockett Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene, there was a lot of smoke coming from the building. Two engines reported to the fire and it was reported extinguished at approximately 10:39 p.m. In addition to the smokey air, the odor of burning wood pellets appeared stronger than usual in the area north of the plant around the Crockett ISD complex and extending to the SH 7 West - Loop 304 junction. The cause of the fire was not known at presstime.
