Suspect arrested in Wednesday murder

Crockett Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the Wednesday shooting death of 34-year-old Steven McCullough.
On Thursday, Sept. 18 following an intense investigation by both local and state law enforcement agencies, Courtney Benton, 21, of Crockett was arrested and charged with terroristic threat and murder, a first-degree felony.
CPD officials began investigating McCullough's murder after they received a 911 call about 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17 reporting a man not moving in a vehicle parked on Stokes Street near the intersection of Pease Street.
CPD officers immediately responded and found the unresponsive McCullough, also known in the area as "Uncle Johnny," in the driver's seat of his vehicle.
ETMC EMS responded and determined that McCullough, had no vital signs.
Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Clyde Black pronounced McCullough dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy to determine the cause.
The autopsy determined that MuCullough died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained from a .22 caliber firearm.
According to CPD officials, several people were interviewed in connection with the case.
As of press time Friday morning, Benton remained in the Houston County Sheriff's Office Jail.
Houston County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers, and Houston County Prosecutors Office assisted CPD with the investigation.
