Houston County Commissioners Court met Tuesday, Sept. 2 for discussion on the 2008 tax rate.  No public comments were heard on the second required hearing.

The court also approved a 2-year contract with Texas Department of State Health Services.  This is a renewal contract with the county clerk's office on the issuance of birth certificates.

For a fee of $23, anyone born in Texas can request a birth certificate from the county clerk's office.  The county will receive $1.83 of that fee.

In other business, County Judge Lonnie Hunt signed a patriotic order proclaiming Sept. 8-13 as Patriotism Week in Houston County.

Crockett Lodge 1729 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks ' president, secretary and chair trustee appeared before the court to petition the order: Bill Howell, Dick McNabb and Tom Jarrett.

The Order promotes the ideas that the citizens of this nation live in freedom, won through the great sacrifices and many tribulations, which have provided the foundation for a free, prosperous and independent life.

The Order states, "It is fitting and proper to recognize this freedom and to honor the nation which provides it."

The Order also urges all citizens to join with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in expressing gratitude for the privilege of American Citizenship with appropriate celebrations and observations.

Glenna Enos, executive director of Senior Citizens of America, SCOA, then accepted a $500 donation from Crockett Elks Lodge l729.
