Grandparents Day Celebrated
Houston County Courier - September 2008

This year National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, Sept. 7.  Some schools in Houston County will observe the 30th anniversary of National Grandparents Day in the coming days.

On Friday, Sept. 5 from 7:30-8 a.m., both Grapeland Elementary and Latexo Elementary schools will honor grandparents with a breakfast of coffee, milk, juice and muffins.

On Monday, Sept. 8, grandparents are invited to eat lunch with their grandchildren at Kennard Elementary School.

Crockett Elementary School invites all grandparents to have lunch with their grandchildren on Tuesday, Sept. 10 by either bringing lunch or enjoying lunch from the cafeteria for $3.

Jordan School celebrates Grandparents Day with special events in October.

The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade (now age 91) of West Virginia.  Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes.

She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide.

In 1978 President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
