In a special ceremony with Major Jarrell Beasley Chapter NSDAR Regent Sherry Culp, Corresponding Secretary Theresa Ramsey, and Constitution Week Chairman Mary Sue Mullen Mayor Wayne Mask proclaimed Thursday–Wednesday, Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week and urged citizens to reflect on the many benefits of the Constitution and American citizenship.
The tradition of celebrating Constitution Week was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17–23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.
The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915, on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
“The people of these United States are the rightful masters of both Congresses and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution,” said Abraham Lincoln in a speech in Cinncinatti, Ohio on Sept. 17, 1859.
The Preamble to the Constitution of the United Sates of America states that “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
