A weekend call to the Houston County Sheriff's Office regarding body laying on the side of the road on SH 19 north of Grapeland resulted in the arrest of a couple for allegedly using methamphetamines in an enclosed area of their home in the presence of their two children, ages four and five, according to HCSO officials. On Sunday, Nov. 17, when deputies arrived on scene, they found a white male subject with head injuries who was in and out of consciousness, according to an HCSO press statement. The man later was identified as James Lewis Gaylord, 23, of Grapeland. During the investigation, it was discovered that the injuries were sustained through mutual combat. According to the arrest affidavit, the altercation reportedly was with Gaylord's brother over the issue of Gaylord and his fiance (Ashlie Marie White, 23, of Grapeland) allegedly using methamphetamines in front of the children. After investigating the reports and after Gaylord was treated at ETMC Crockett, both he and White were arrested for Injury to a Child, a State Jail Felony and were taken to the Houston County Jail. Bond was set at $7,000 each. Both are still incarcerated at this time. In an unrelated incident, also in the Grapeland area, a woman stopped for allegedly running a stop sign found herself jailed on Friday, Nov. 15 for not only the stop sign violation, not having insurance, expired registration and driving while license suspended and three outstanding felony warrants from McLennan County, but also for alleged possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).
