Drive-through nativity at Grapeland Baptist Church
Houston County Courier
In a time when some keep trying to silence the reason for celebrating Christmas, others are proclaiming it loud and clear. Grapeland Baptist Church is among those proclaiming the Good News. Members of the church have been preparing for weeks to share the story that changed the world. Between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and Dec. 14, visitors can drive through scenes of the Nativity story - all without having to exit their vehicles. People dressed in costume will greet visitors at the entrance with a special gift for each person. A sign at each scene will explain the Christmas story, from the shepherds watching their flocks in the field, to the Nativity manger, women going about their business in Bethlehem and the wise men following the star. The event will include more than 20 costumed characters, live animals and the sounds of Christmas music. Though the idea began with Ricky and Linda Hitt, the whole church has participated in the preparations. Carole McQueen headed up a group of women making all the necessary costumes. Others constructed the stable, worked on lighting and other props. The church hopes this will become an annual event and a tradition for Houston County families as well as those from surrounding counties. For more information call the church at 936-687-4292. Grapeland Baptist Church is located just off the U.S. 287 By-Pass on FM 227 East in Grapeland.
