The Houston County Choral Society will present "A Ceremony of Nine Lessons and Carols" at First Christian Church Memorial (the Little White Church), in Grapeland Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to this free event. This will be the principal concert of the Houston Choral Society for the holiday season. Their special music offering will include choral selections from Pepper Choplin's Christmas cantata, "Night of the Father's Love". In addition to choral music, the service will include congregational singing of Christmas carols. This historic Festival of Carols consists of scripture readings, special music and Christmas carols. the service traces the loving purposes of God, from the creation to the incarnation of Jesus Christ, as revealed through the Bible. The scriptures, not the carols, are the focus of the service. Rev. Chuck Bratz of First United Methodist Church in Grapeland will lead the service. Dr. Charles Allen and several young ladies from the community will read the scripture selections. This service of Lessons and Carols originated in Truro, England in 1880. In 1918, the dean of Kings' College, Cambridge University, in England adapted the service for use on Christmas Eve in the King's College Chapel. First Christian Church Memorial is located at 301 North Market St. in Grapeland.
