On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Latexo ISD School Board met in a special session, with all members present, and unanimously voted to amend the order calling for a bond issue. The board voted on Feb. 17, to call a bond for the May 10 election. The order was not as specific as the board felt it needed to be. Because of this, the board felt that it was appropriate to amend the language of the order. The order approved on Feb. 26 reads: Now, therefore, be it ordered by the Board of Trustees of the Latexo Independent School District that: Proposition 1 Shall the Board of Trustees of the Latexo Independent School District be authorized to issue bonds of the district, in one or more series or installments, in the amount of $4,850,000 for the construction, renovation, acquisition and equipment of school facilities in the district with priority given to the construction of new classrooms and science labs at the high school and construction of a new gymnasium, which bonds shall mature, bear interest and be issued and sold in accordance with law at the time of issuance; and may the board of trustees levy, pledge, assess, and collect annual Ad Valorem taxes on all taxable property in the district, sufficient, without limit as to rate or amount, to pay the principal of and interest on such bonds, and the costs of any credit agreements (including credit agreements executed or authorized in antiicpation of, in relation to, or in connection with the bonds), all as authorized by the Constitution and laws of the State of Texas and the United states of America. This is in keeping with the pledge by the Board to make certain that the bond money is used for the purposes stated above before any other projects can be completed. The board has discussed a list of items that will be addressed if the building costs of the projects are such that money is available to accomplish them. These projects are (listed by priority, but fund amounts may affect the order in which they are completed): • Traffic flow improvements at the elementary • Awnings to aide in traffic flow and student pick up on both campuses . • Renovate the elementary science lab. • Abatement( removal) of asbestos containing materials in the high school • Renovation of high school restrooms. • Replacement of flooring in the high school. • Replacement of heating and cooling units at the elementary • Upgrade of power grid at the high school • Painting of the high school interior • Upgrade stage lighting •Replace desks/equipment that are broken or not working. This list is not all inclusive, but it does give a good outline of the board's vision for facility upgrades . The Latexo ISD Board of Trustees also discussed the cost to the taxpayer, and after considering all angles, voted to accept an estimated tax increase at 4.6 cents per $100 of valuation. Don Elsom, superintendent at Latexo ISD, stated that taxpayers could contact his office if they have any questions and that he would be glad to figure the increase of taxes on any property they may own. His office number is 936- 544-5664 and his email is firstname.lastname@example.org. The superintendent also stated that information would soon be posted on the Latexo ISD website describing the projects and showing some conceptual drawings of the facilities. Latexo ISD's website can be found at www.latexoisd. net. Informational meetings will be held at facilities around the district so that our constituents may gain all the information they need to make an informed decision on May 10. We ask that everyone attend, a meeting or get in touch with my office so that they can ask questions and see what the bond is about and why it is needed to upgrade district facilities.
