Assistant Chief
On Tuesday, Oct. 16, the Austonio Community Council and the Austonio Volunteer Fire Department met in an open forum at 7 p.m. to discuss the future of both organizations.
A number of concerned members and citizens were in attendance.
There were two items discussed. The first to be addressed was the existing physical condition of the community center, the extent of disrepair and what needed to be done to repair the building.
There was a good discussion and willingness to bring the building back to working order. There were ways discussed on how to fund such endeavors and commitments to research ideas that were brought forth.
Volunteers from both organizations said they are willing to do whatever it takes to make things happen toward that goal.
The president of the community Council, Danny Crawford, advised the council needed to meet more regularly and he would make notification of such.
The second item of discussion was that Austonio Volunteer Fire Department had been in the process of attempting to build a new fire station on another tract of property but decided to approach the Community Council and see if the civic center would agree to participate.
If found to be agreeable, the VFD would stay on the existing property and join the building together under one roof. Representatives said the concept would be more economical and benefit all involved.
The AVFD provides coverage for Austonio, Ash Creek, Mapleton, Pearsons Chapel and Vistula communities.
The civic center is also available and open to those communities.
