Grapeland Volunteer Fire Department, responded to a blaze about 1 mile south of FM 2022 in Slocum on Thursday morning, Jan. 31 about 8 a.m.

According to witnesses, two 300 barrel oil tanks were fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

The call for assistance came from officials in Slocum, which is located in Anderson County.
Grapeland firefighters remained on the scene until about 3 p.m.

Witnesses at the scene said the fire was so intense that the bunker gear worn by firefighters was smoking as they neared the fire.

Television news reports on Friday morning, Feb. 1 indicated that a lightning strike  from early morning storms likely ignited the blaze.

Witnesses on the scene said flames from the blaze at certain points reached hundreds of feet into the air.

Authorities said no one in the area was evacuated and no serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
