Proclamation declaring May as Elder Abuse Prevention Month

On Tuesday, April 22 before the regular meeting of the Houston County commissioner’s court meeting, Houston County Judge Lonnie Hunt signed a proclamation declaring May as Elder Abuse Prevention Month,
Lois Ball, adult protective service specialist IV and Robert McLoed adult protective service specialist II brought county, city and local organizations together for the proclamation.
The proclamation which urges citizens to join Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in acknowledge the importance of health, safety and well being of the elderly and disabled.
Last year in Texas nearly 74,737 people who are elderly or have disabilities were victims of abuse, neglect and exploitation.
In our county, Adult Protective Services received 257 reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation and 216 were confirmed as victims.
“As one of our most important natural resources, elderly people deserve our utmost attention and respect.
“We must protect their health, safety and rights.
“Some day, we will be elderly too, and we should treat them the same way we hope to be treated ourselves.” Ms. Ball said.
