Local Student Honored with U.S. Service Academy Appointments
Houston County Courier - May 2008
U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, announced the appointment of Jake Darsey to U.S. Military Academy at West Point
In order to receive an appointment to attend one of the service academies, which include the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy at West Point, students must first receive a nomination from a Member of Congress. Each of the eight students went through a comprehensive interview process to receive Barton’s nomination, which was then sent to the academies to determine who would receive appointments.
"The U.S. service academies play a key role in developing many of our nation’s finest leaders,” Congressman Barton said. “I want to congratulate each of these students for their individual accomplishments and express my support of them as they begin this time of dedicated learning and service to our nation.”
Darsey attended Grapeland High School, where he was a member of the student government, the National Honor Society and the 4-H Club.
Darsey also played on the football, basketball and tennis teams at Grapeland H.S. He was named to the All State Academic Team his senior year.
