Purvis exits after 32 years service as commissioner

LIVINGSTON – Retiring Pct. 3 Commissioner Buddy Purvis closed out the fi nal commissioner’s court session for 2008 and his last after 32 years by making the motion to adjourn Tuesday’s regular meeting. Purvis and Pct. 4 Commissioner Tommy Overstreet squared off for a few minutes on the last agenda item regarding county expenditures for road and bridge projects, but in the end the item was deleted after County Auditor Ray Stelly clarifi ed that the $960,000 surplus was the sum of the surplus for all four precincts and not just that of Pct. 4. Deputy County Clerk Schelana Walker and Carol Bailey told the court that County Clerk Barbara Middleton’s office had received the Bureau of Vital Statistics 5-star award for the ninth year in a row at the recent 54th annual conference in Austin Dec. 11. The court approved the merger of engineering and custodial departments into one department to be located at the new facility on Allie Bean Drive and under the direction of County Maintenance Supervisor Jay Burks. Commissioners approved a request from Border to Border Exploration, LLC for right of access to county property adjacent to the landfill on FM 942 for the purpose of conducting linear and boundary surveys for a proposed well. Also approved was the ratification of a TCDP Disaster Recovery project contract to include the installation of transfer switches and additional wiring and installation changes at certain lift stations and water plant locations.
